Keeping Children of the Dalit Fishing Community in School
Children from Dalit fishing families in Cox's Bazar face poverty, discrimination and the constant threat of cyclones and floods. Many leave school early to work.
HEART's Supplementary Educational Assistance for the Dalit Fishing Community (SEDUAC) project helps them stay in education. It enrols children in formal schools, provides learning materials and runs community learning centres for children, young people and adults who missed school.
Learning and resilience together
The project also trains families in climate-resilient livelihoods and disaster risk management, and advocates with local government for better services for marginalised communities. Parents and community leaders help plan and monitor the work so that it lasts beyond the project.
